Figure views

Every view is an average over the sampled window, 1600 by 1000 pixels with a thumbnail, written to figures/<set>/ with a manifest. Signed fields use a diverging blue, grey and orange map centred on zero; magnitudes use a perceptually uniform sequential map. There are no rainbow maps. Each image carries an orientation line computed from its camera.

All examples below are the same coarse TerraHawk flight case at alpha 8, rendered by mcopenfoam.

View Field Camera
A skin friction along the free stream, with friction lines top
A2 angle between the wall flow and the free stream, 0 to 180 degrees top
A3 skin friction along the free stream, underside bottom
B pressure coefficient top
C streamwise vorticity on the wake plane from behind
D velocity magnitude on the centreline plane from the side
E Cp on the skin with thresholded wake vorticity three-quarter perspective

A sweep also gets strip_A.png, every point’s view A side by side. Each panel keeps its own colour range, so compare the patterns between panels rather than the shades.

Top view coloured by skin friction along the free stream with friction lines.
Wall shear stress projected on the free-stream direction along the local surface, divided by the dynamic pressure. Orange is attached flow moving aft, grey is near zero, blue is reversed. At this angle the aft outer wing is grey with spanwise friction lines: close to separating, not yet reversed. The friction lines are integrated on the surface.
Top view coloured by the angle between the surface flow and the free stream.
The angle between the wall shear direction and the free stream, on a fixed 0 to 180 degree scale: dark is streamwise, mid-tones spanwise, bright reversed. It shows spanwise flow that A, which uses only the streamwise component, reads as weak attachment.
View from below coloured by skin friction along the free stream.
View A from below, with the same colour scale.
Top view coloured by pressure coefficient.
Cp from the kinematic pressure and the freestream speed.
Wake plane behind the aircraft coloured by streamwise vorticity, with the aircraft silhouette in grey.
Streamwise vorticity on the wake plane. The plane is drawn translucent so the airframe that sheds the vortices shows through.
Side view of the centreline plane coloured by velocity magnitude.
Velocity magnitude on the centreline plane, framed on the aircraft rather than the whole domain the plane cuts.
Perspective view of the aircraft coloured by Cp, with vortex cores on three wake planes behind it.
Cp on every surface, and streamwise vorticity on each wake plane, cut to the cores above 15% of the range so the quiet part of an eight-metre plane does not haze the scene.
